Multimedia University Students Protest Over Delayed HELB Funds

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 3 — Police are currently engaged in running battles with students of Multimedia University in Rongai who are currently protesting over delayed disbursement of Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds.

The rowdy students lit bonfires and blocked the roads around campus including the busy Magadi Road Tuesday morning forcing police to use teargas to disperse them.

The protests also affected businesses around the campus.

Amateur footage circulated widely on social media platforms, including X and Facebook, showed students setting tires ablaze and others fleeing from the institution, with some captured scaling fences to escape the chaos.

The public institution was yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the protests.

The protest came days after Embakasi East legislator Babu Owino, a former student leader, decried the delayed payment and challenged the student leaders across the institutions of higher learning to take the lead in advocating for the fast tracking of the financial aid.

Owino urged the government to resolve the situation arguing that most students who are dependent on the financial support are going through rough times.

“The CS TREASURY together with HELB must move with Speed, release money to University Students who are sick and tired of sleeping Hungry. Student leaders should stop sleeping on duty,” Owino said on September 29.
